Behind the Walls | National Trust Nostell

I directed and produced an immersive film with 24 Design, for National Trust Nostell working with mental health charity Mindful Movers, which explores the life of Sabine Winn and her struggles with grief and solitude, during the 1700s.

Projection mapped inside her room at Nostell, the film records a conversation I facilitated with a group of women who reflect on Sabine’s life, relative to their own lived experiences. Prior to filming, I led a series of creative writing workshops and discussions with the Mindful Movers. We studied Sabine Winn’s personal items and letters, and learned about her life, reflecting on how periods of isolation and traumatic events may have affected her and how she may have soothed herself. As a group we co-designed how the immersive installation would feel for visitors, when encountering Sabine’s story in her personal space. A deep sense of compassion, empathy and care was established for Sabine amongst the group, which is captured in the film.

The project is referenced in Showing Feelings: Exploring and Exhibiting Women’s Wellbeing and Emotion in the English Country House written by emotions historian, Ruby Rutter.

A clip of the film as it appears projection mapped on the wall in Sabine Winn’s dressing room at National Trust Nostell, where the full immersive installation can be experienced.

Directed and produced by Charlotte Smithson for 24 Design, commissioned by National Trust Nostell. Filming, projection mapping and sound by Tripledotmakers.
