MANIESTO
An entangled co-conspiracy
An Entangled Co-conspiracy
To sustain a regenerative practice my work is guided by a manifesto. In collaboration with the natural world, I conspire to encourage awe and a sense of intimacy and meaning between people and the places we inhabit. Through my work I am seeking out co-conspirators - it is an invitation to closer connect with the wild and with one another. We protect what we love.
Employ powerful quietness
My art is a form of quiet activism. Tapping the power of quietness takes time, distillation and patience. I work with the material and medium of negative space as an antidote to capitalist patriarchal systems, loss, fatigue, toxicity. There are qualities within it to inform my systems of making, footprint and voice. First we must hush the noise.
Take little
When taking from nature, I am intentional and frugal working only with organic, regenerative, abundant vegetation, preferably material already unrooted. I actively practise and teach ‘leave no trace’ methods of experiencing the natural world. When using primary source materials I source only from ethical supplies and commit to efficient methods of making.
I am respectful to all life forms. I am vegan and encourage plant-based living as a step to lessen impact on the earth. My home and studio are fueled by the UK’s greenest energy supplies with certified green vegan electricity, and carbon-neutralised natural and sustainable green gas. My practices to conserve water provide a well of ideas and narratives to explore further.
Restore more
My restorative practices must outweigh my use of natural resources. Projects strive to improve the soil, invest in the native seed bank and create biodiverse habitats for wildlife. I encourage restoration of our personal well being as an important step to caring for the world around us. There is always more to do.
Guard the still and silence
Natural silence is on the cusp of extinction. I study and teach concepts of stillness to restore natural silence and encourage it to prevail. I create opportunities where the richness of silence and stillness can be experienced. When we fall in love with silence, our personal connections with wilderness emerge.
Make with the spare
Before reaching for new materials, I research and source thematically relevant waste streams and local supplies of discard. Wombling leftovers and activating waste breeds community, resourcefulness, innovation, situatedness, kindness, story, support, entanglement, love, gratitude, metatextuality, pride. The wider environmental gains are well known.
Listen to the wild
First, I observe. I practice noticing natural processes, tuning into unspoken systems and cycles, reading the land, skies and seas, exploring energy, intuition, our bodily rhythms and currents. What can we learn from what is really happening around us? How do we need to respond?
Live within, not without
I cultivate and guard my own place in nature through mindfulness. Daily meditation instills reflection, healing and kindness in my work. To live without this interior world, depletes the effectiveness of my activism and imagination. Mindful approaches are embedded in all aspects of my practice.
Enable others to entwine
Through teaching and collaboration, I share my ways of seeing our place on Earth. My pedagogy takes a restorative approach for the health of people and our planet. I utilise human psychologies of nature connectedness, wellbeing, and biophilic design to encourage sensory immersion and methods of co-design and collaborative enquiry to kindle togetherness and community. It is an entangled co-conspiracy…
