The Nutting Artist-in-Residence, Fallingwater USA
In September 2025, I had the immense privilege of being immersed at Fallingwater in Pennsylvania, through my residency supported by The Nutting Foundation.
Fallingwater is hailed internationally as a masterpiece of 20th century architecture and is Frank Lloyd Wright’s most recognized example of the harmonious union of art, architecture and nature. Entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963, this dramatically cantilevered house over a waterfall was designed in 1935 for its natural setting and inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019.
The first time I stepped inside, the house was closed to the public and Sarah, one of the educators, led the way in silence and allowed the house to unfold.
What sweeps you in gets tangled up with all of your senses, including buried ones you didn’t know you have. You hear it, feel it thermally, smell it and watch it pinch with darkness and emerge in light. It is both utterly other and innately familiar all at once. As soon as we stepped in, I instantly took off my shoes. In the following three weeks, I spent time with the house daily, awed, trying to take it in, as well as being immersed in Bear Run and High Meadow’s vast natural expanses.
To me Fallingwater feels like something beyond architecture. It feels like something beyond design genius. It feels like something beyond nature. It is all of these and something entirely of an enigma. A home, yes. Home, itself, yes. Futuristic and primordial. It definitely feels alive.
One of the intangible elements that I have never experienced or even considered anywhere before is that while there is luxury, safeness and comfort, at no point are you removed of your wits as to the power and perils and life force of the natural world that surrounds and suspends you. You are held and humbled all at once.
Thank you to everyone at Fallingwater who have shared their palpable love for this magic, knowledge and care with me. Thank you to the Nutting Foundation for supporting my residency. And thank you Fallingwater for some healing that I so desperately needed. That’s the word I’m stuck on…‘care‘.
